The technique of Sand Tapestry was pioneered by world renown glass artist David Alcala in 1976. Each original design is created by weaving layers of colored sand that is poured between two upright panes of glass. Fine details are achieved as the artist uses a thin wire rod to move and sculpt the tiny grains of sand. Today David's son Markus keeps the sand art tradition alive by creating beautifully intricate and colorful landscape scenes inspired by his travels.
